Oxford, England, band A Silent Film seems prepped for pop music success, at least by the standards of the old model. Great for them: There's lots more money in selling a ton of downloads (and eventually, probably doing the whole "open for U2" thing) than there is in scoring Pitchfork's elusive Best New Music tag. With breathless, romantic bombast and overwrought, emotive lyricism, these Brits fall near Muse and Coldplay. Accordingly, there are plenty of those pretty falsetto melodies that flavor post-OK Computer British radio rock, much like how Eddie Vedder provided fodder for mid-'90s alternative. If that's your scene, here's your band. Gentle Robot opens. —Corbie Hill
