City unveils plans tonight for Old North Durham Park

After months of scrappy debate, Durham’s Parks and Recreation department tonight is expected to unveil the fate of Old North Durham Park, a 3.6-acre space at Geer and Foster streets. The city has scheduled a community meeting for 7 p.m. at the downtown Durham Armory, 212 Foster St.

The park currently hosts the only full-sized soccer field in downtown, and one of only a dozen full-sized fields in the city.…

Durham just got another small push in its efforts to bring Google's high-speed Internet access project to the Bull City—the endorsement of the mayor of Morgantown, W.Va., whose home team lost to the Duke Blue Devils in the semifinals for the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship.

When it became apparent that Duke's men's basketball team was going to meet the West Virginia Mountaineers on April 3, Durham Mayor Bill Bell and Morgantown Mayor Bill Byrne made a friendly wager.…

Hoop Dreams director to curate sports films at Full Frame

The Full Frame Documentary Film Festival announced today that Steve James, director of one of the most successful documentaries ever, the 1994 epic Hoop Dreams, will curate a sports-themed program at this year's festival, which runs April 2-5.

James' sidebar will be called This Sporting Life, and will not be limited to documentaries.…

In a fortuitous bit of timing, Barack Obama arrived in Florida the day after the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Boston Red Sox for the American League pennant.

In a rally at George Steinbrenner Field, Obama was introduced by the savior of Game 7, rookie pitching phenom David Price.

Among the half-dozen players joining Obama were at least two other members of the 2008 Durham Bulls: the Howard Zinn-reading lightning bolt Fernando Perez and the fence-busting slugger Jonny Gomes.…

Bulls' Johnson goes to Rays, lifts them over Sox

The New York Times has a poignant story about the Tampa Bay Rays' Dan Johnson, who until Monday was a Durham Bull. He helped propel the Rays over their rivals, the Boston Red Sox, at Fenway Park, on Tuesday, as the Times reported, in a 5-4 win, which might have been the most important victory in franchise history.

In a turnaround season that has been filled with superb stories for the Rays, Johnson showed up late from Class AAA Durham, hit a pinch-hit, game-tying homer off a formidable pitcher and crafted a tale that was as compelling as any other that Tampa Bay has authored.

And by the time Wednesday's 14-inning game was over, the good guys had held on to their two-and-a-half game lead over the second-place Red Sox.…

Durham commisioners approve stadium upgrade
