Thanks very much to all who submitted questions and comments to me directly or at www.triangleland.org. Yesterday, we posted at the link above TLC’s Q&A Forum.

I am excited about the dialogue that has begun, and TLC staff and volunteers are working to set up additional gatherings to discuss conservation and preservation further.

Kind regards,
Laura Herbst's article, "Deep Cuts" (Independent (10/12/11) gave an unfair portrayal of modern forest management. The article is a general criticism of the Triangle Land Conservancy's (TLC) policy of harvesting trees on its land holdings.

In case anyone really believes that Kevin Brice has "no more credentials than a conversation with a biologist and some volunteer work one time," you can read about why he was selected for the job in the article at http://www.triangleland.org/about/bricehir…. I, for one, am very glad that the guy who heads up my local land trust knows something about business and finance.
first of all, I am not a "logging contractor", and I was not working on a percentage. Moreover, I had been a volunteer at TLC for about 15 years before I ever got a paying job harvesting timber on TLC land.

Laura Herbst deserves our collective thanks for demonstrating how journalists can play an active role in challenging corruption and protecting our institutions and resources. She revealed some serious and significant issues with an organization that claims it’s doing one thing while doing the opposite.

Claims of other commenters in support of selective logging and forest management are surely well-intentioned, while clearly coming from people who do not know the science and important details about effective forest management practices.

2) I am acquainted with Kevin Bryce (TLC) and Jerry Gaertner (North State Forestry), and know them both to be people of integrity, not given to cloaked agendas, vested interests, or greed.
3) The more I read the article, the more I feel it is a meticulously engineered form of "Gotcha" Journalism.
This was the work the TLC did for Preston development that troubled me. Essentially Preston got a great deal on their environmental assessment that preston has to do by law anyway and got the #1 group that should be opposing a 6000 acre mega development to support them in public forums. The strategy of engagement is one thing but I was notably troubled by this.
