It's a bit bemusing and a bit frustrating to watch this all happen from Durham. While I generally take the side of the pro-diversity policy opponents of the school board, I can't help but periodically point out that the blame for this falls on Wake's voters and other elected leaders.

Wake County, now the fastest growing county in the nation, has steadfastly refused to actually deal with the consequences of its growth, consistently wanting to blame someone else.

Responding to Matt -- Thanks for your note. I used the term anti-diversity because it seemed to me to precisely state the board majority's position, which was to take all references to diversity out of the school system's longstanding assignment policy (Policy 6200).

Thanks, yet again, to Bob Geary, and his fair, but accurate, comprehensive and strong review of the Wake County education mess--published before the well-deserved and embarrassing national TV skewering by satirist Stephen Colbert. Later, in his 1/20 N&O column, Barry Saunders reminds folks who apparently still need it about the 1954 U.S. Supreme Court decision "that separate-but-equal schools were unconstitutional and that they should be desegregated 'with all deliberate speed.'" The Wake County School System and the General (with his SO deficient credentials in his new career of education) must do better for our young than has so far been shown since November.
