One looming issue I see is farmer honesty. Small farmers, in a pinch, can buy from somewhere else, resell and claim it is their own.

What are the chances I'm eating food made from genetically engineered crops?
Depending on what you eat, the chances could be fairly high that you are eating some genetically engineered (GE) food. About twelve different kinds of GE food crops have been developed for commercialization, but only six of these are currently being grown (corn, soybeans, canola, cotton, squash, and papaya) and have some chance of being part of the food you eat.

As GreenGourmet states "I think we can say that people are eating a lot more GMO than they realize." This is a real problem for folks who are eating a Standard American Diet (SAD), eating fast food, and shopping at Harris Teeter, Stop & Shop, Walmart, etc. I agree with truth in label laws.

Considering corn, wheat and soy are in almost anything that is processed these days, I think we can say that people are eating a lot more GMO than they realize. Why we can't have labeling laws that protect the consumer, instead of the producer or processor is puzzling...and shameful.

The response of the large agribusinesses is telling - first they supported the law, then when small farms were exempted, they opposed it. That should have made it clear to our lawmakers that what this law was really about was squashing the smaller competition under a mountain of government red tape.

we don't know how lucky we are to have access to the local agriculture that we do; however, we also seem to easily forget how many dairy and crop farms there actually once were in this great growing region of the State of NC. Blessed be those who provide our sustaining food and goods.
