Freezing the budget won't balance it without a huge tax increase, which just won't happen.

The community college system is not as bloated as the UNC system, which is more fertile ground for budget cuts. K-12 will also have to take a significant cut, and they can start at DPI itself.

While I am a fiscal conservative, my main governmental beef is with the federal government, *not* the state and local governments. The General Assembly has not given state employees pay raises since July 2008, most recent raises before that often did not even keep up with inflation, most state employees essentially have no travel money anymore, and the health-insurance benefits for state employees have eroded beyond that of the average private-sector employee.

In addition, our community college teachers -- especially those at our smaller community colleges, which have no clout -- are teaching six to eight classes per semester, which has ruined employee morale and decreased the quality of North Carolina's community-college curriculum.
