Well, we currently have sheriffs operating outside the laws to promote their own prejudices and biases; as the most blatant example, Joe Arpaio of Arizona, who himself has misspent monies entrusted to him, destroyed documentation he was requested to provide the state and federal governments over two years ago, and again this year, practiced racial bias to the extent that the justice department failed to renew his 287(g) privileges (which has caused him to push the lovely governor, with the aid of his FAIR allies, to further step outside United States laws) and has drawn hundreds of thousands of dollars of lawsuits against the county he purportedly represents. And yes folks, some of the same prejudicial mis-application of law is occurring right here in good ole Wake County.

Make up your own mind on this one....

What Kind of Crimes are Felonies?

Violent felonies can be anything from First Degree Murder (the most serious crime in North Carolina) to Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon (Armed Robbery). Violent felonies also include rapes, sex offenses, violent assaults, attempted murder, manslaughter (a form of killing), burglaries.

Here's What Indy wrote on the first page:

Constitutional amendment: Should felons be sheriff?

Voters in all counties will see this prompt on the ballot:
Check "For" or "Against" for the following: "Constitutional amendment providing that no person convicted of a felony may serve as sheriff." This referendum was placed on the ballot by legislators after five convicted felons across the state ran in the May sheriff primaries.

That old saying about not letting a fox into the henhouse—well, it makes sense.

I am surprised that a progressive newspaper like the Independent would endorse a constitutional amendment providing that no person convicted of a felony may serve as sheriff.

If a person's past is tarnished enough to preclude them from serving as sheriff, so be it.
