Dear Mr, Van Deman,

I am thrilled to see that after what I'm sure can be categorized as an avalanche of e-mails from every corner of Durham's diverse population expressing their dismay that our cherished institution The Museum of Life and Science was taking the extreme low road of openly siding with the sleazeball Billboard industry, you have been obligated to write a letter of "clarification".

Unfortunately your letter does not accurately portray the events surrounding the Museum's appalling letter to Mayor Bill Bell in which the Museum openly expressed how "they will benefit" from a change in the ordinance and to make sure that the Mayor considers "the opportunities for non profits with the ordinance change". By anyone's standards this is a clear endorsement.

Subject: Clarification from Museum of Life and Science

Distinguished Members of the Durham City Council:

I am writing to address some confusion and misunderstanding about the Museum’s stance on the billboard ordinance under consideration by the Durham City Council. An article in Independently Weekly on June 30 correctly stated that the Museum has “not taken a position” on the billboard ordinance, but the article apparently has caused some confusion among its readers.

forget the blight of the billboards for a moment..but only for a moment...the methods that Fairway uses should be evidence enough that they do not deserve to do business here. the PAC vote was a railroaded joke, did not represent the people, and contained at least one illegal vote.

Summary. This text amendment is requested by Fairway Outdoor Advertising (Fairway or the applicant) and would revise the off-premise sign provisions of the UDO.

Lisa - you left out the part where Marion Lambert was not even authorized to represent PAC 5 at this meeting. Since her vote was invalid, the City-Wide PAC did not authorize an endorsement at the meeting in question.
