Really appreciate being alerted to the sludge problems, since I have been using Milorganite(R) without realizing that it contains heavy metals and pathogens in high levels. Milorganite(R) is a good deer repellant and fertilizer, but alas, too toxic for my continued use.

The article states: " Farmers generally use about 13,000 gallons of sludge per acre, according to the city's Water and Sewer Operations Manager Eric Davis" ----Assuming Eric Davis is referring to Alamance County. Well, someone needs to get Eric Davis a new calculator, because the old 2007 figure of number of gallons [19,789,200 ] divided by the number of acres [969.2 ], comes out to 20,418 gallons of sludge per acre….

Thank you SO much for covering the increasingly important (and dangerous) subject of sludge application in agricultural practices. I understand that many brands of fertilizer available via Home Depot and Lowes also have sludge components, thereby making runoff from our yards and decorative plantings a hazard as well.

How can we have an intelligent discussion about the "output" of which every person on earth, whether they live in an urban or rural community, contributes without any mention of alternative disposal methods? In the absence of alternative disposal methods, land application is the only viable alternative unless each person wants to dispose of their own.

We need alternatives, but in the meantime, we need to look at how to make land application safer, including bigger setbacks and enforcement of current rules on notifications, timing, weather conditions, and spraying techniques.

Why is it, a cattle farmer, Dr. Sydnor, in Alamance County, can recognize the inherit risk in Burlington's sewage waste spread near his cows, but our County School Board's only pediatrician, Dr. Kristen Moffitt, cannot do so, herself when it is repeatedly spread near her school children?

"Sydnor called Synagro, which had supplied the sludge, and asked for someone to visit his farm. "Their representative just could not answer my questions about what was in it, and as a physician I had some questions about pesticides and pharmaceuticals," Sydnor says.
