I don't get how Cruyff can claim "They didn't want the ball." The Dutch desperately wanted the ball, and went forward every time they got it.

Of all the pundits, Cruyff knows what he's talking about. One of his quotes goes, "If we have the ball, they can’t score."

He's the linchpin between the Total Football of Holland (Ajax/Rinus Michels) and the current Spanish style of possession soccer (Barcelona/Pep Guardiola).

Very interesting comments from Cruyff. He also criticizes Howard Webb... for failing to send off de Jong and otherwise being too lenient.

Refs in finals are under a lot of pressure not to "ruin" the game with an early sending-off. The DeJong foul was so blatant though that no one could possibly have criticized him for showing red.

Webb said in a pre-game interview that he didn't want to be the focus of attention. I think he failed, however, by not setting the tone early when he let off de Jong in the first half.

Nigel de Jong should have been taken off the field in handcuffs, not just issued a straight red.

Howard Webb has gotten flak for issuing too many cards, but I'm not sure what his alternatives were. He really didn't want to send off a player in the first half, and it was almost as if the Dutch exploited that.
