      <![CDATA[Unfortunately, if the World Cup were to move to become more of a preseason event (the Western European preseason, that is), it would simply begin in early July instead of mid-June. The "off-season" in international football (defined as the time the players get to take their families to the coast) is about four to six weeks—assuming they haven't been called up for national team duty.

      <![CDATA[I know there's no way of changing any of this for the World Cup, but the World Baseball Classic is played in March before the American, Japanese, Taiwanese and Korean seasons get underway. The players are fresher (and not sick of each other yet).

      <![CDATA[Nice post, although it's worth noting that both England and the United States are sitting on two points. A glass half-empty for the former and half-full for the latter!<br>

More seriously, I think it's worth looking at the nations who operate the five top leagues in Europe: England, France, Italy, Germany and Spain.
