Wow, am I ever glad I saw Delta Rae live, when they opened for Carbon Leaf at the Cradle, before reading an opinion like this. These "kids" have the talent and creativity to make a big splash if they get the publicity and support from the local scene.

It is tribute to Delta Rae's talent, drive and diligent rehearsal that a critic could actually knock the music because the finished product "sounds too easy." Anyone who chats with Eric, Ian, Brittany and Elizabeth -- plus "full band" mates Mike and Mark McKee -- and who experiences this group live, will not mistake them for "The Partridge Family" meets "A Mighty Wind" meets "Glee."

I'll grant that some of the lyrics are a decade or so beyond the fresh, handsome faces singing them.

      A Splendid Overture!

I have been really impressed with everything I have seen and heard from Delta Rae, from videos to this recent recording release. I am moved by the content of the songs and the sound of the band itself.

I would encourage the band to continue developing the individual character of all vocalists and to use harmonies judiciously so as to keep the individual voices out there in good detail.

Delta Rae brings excitement and promise to the Triangle's music scene.

So we have a local band, just starting out, who puts some money together and puts out their own album. In the process they pick up a crowd of diehard local fans and inject a ton of excitement and fresh energy into the Triangle music scene -- and bring out a couple of big name artists who come down to Durham just to have the opportunity to play with them.

Then we have a local paper, who rather than embracing a homegrown, undisputedly talented group of kids, decides to take the first possible opportunity to dismiss them; treats them like they're phonies, like they're just masquerading as "a couple of poor Southern kids."
