Yes, there are dilapidated, dirty, non-economical busses running all over town for the average person who can't afford a car. The R-Line is for the urbanite who must park in any of more than a dozen downtown parking areas and enjoy a night of "driving you to drink" as the Indy headline so aptly puts it.

Raleigh Rob is correct, levels of service and prices are two different (though related) issues. In comparison with the relatively sorry level of bus service in Raleigh, Five Points has excellent service, with two routes with a total of 15 minute headways to downtown, (#6 and #2)and going outbound the routes go two different directions, and just six blocks away is the #8 route on St Mary's Street.

I'm not going to pretend to know the reasons behind the design of the route, however I think the cost/benefit to extending the route ~1mi to Five Points and ~.5mi down Hillsborough make total sense.

    Five Points has clear reasons.

Real cities have real transportation solutions in their downtown core to move people around quickly and reduce both traffic and parking congestion. Coming from Seattle, which has a downtown ride free zone, I'm amused by the whining on the part of suburbanites who expect a deliberately purposed route to go everywhere in the city for them.
