One of your readers commented about the Undertaken With Love website, which has a page of resources about home funerals in North Carolina. I just wanted to let you know the URL for the website has now changed to http://www.undertakenwithlove.org To find the N.C. page, go to "State Home Funeral Laws" in the left side menu, then scroll down to the link to "North Carolina."

There is no law requiring embalming (except in some states and only covering specific circumstances such as transportation over state lines). Embalming is purely for viewing purposes.

In rural Yancey County we can bury bodies on private property more than 50 feet from a water source; top of body must be 18" or more below surface; shroud is acceptable. Unembalmed bodies may be held several days if cooled.

Perhaps there is an incorporated entity that has such an embalming law but I seriously doubt it. Check out homefuneralmanual.org/northcarolinaresources and you will be amazed at how liberal the laws are in North Carolina especially regarding burials on unincorporatedland.

I believe by law you have to be embalmed within 24 hours of death if you aren't buried by then. So it's hard to dodge the embalming thing.
