The Internet has turned the newspaper industry on its head and those editorial and sales staff who have lost their jobs because of it should consider leveraging their skills to start their own online ventures. Our company, Sports Reporting Technologies, developed a high school sports platform designed to help citizen journalists and underemployed sports writers to start their own high school sports sites with a multimedia platform that blows away anything offered by online newspapers today.

The N&O has been at least three newspapers since the 1980s: the risible amateur-hour production emceed by morons and Luddites like Bob Brooks and Claude (The Mod) Sitton; the big, lavishly staffed hybrid formed by submerging the Raleigh Times, a new place that looked even better than it was when you considered where it had come from, a place where people could take chances and try new things and which won a Pulitzer; and this latest, sorry-ass, starveling incarnation. But what the earliest version of the N&O had to offer reporters, at least, compared to the newest version, was the possibility of moving up through a series of increasingly responsible jobs (city hall, county government, statehouse and Washington) and then off to a better paper in a bigger and more interesting town.

It's amazing to me how many good news and features stories The News & Observer misses every week and not because of inadequate staffing but simply out of either a lack of interest or a lack of desire to get out there on the trail and follow a developing story. I ride Triangle Transit buses most weekdays to a number of locations in and around N.C. State, UNC and Duke in Raleigh, Chapel Hill and Durham, and if I personally don't see something at each stop which would make for a good news story, then often I will hear comments from fellow riders about various happenings and developments which, if confirmed through proper source checks would make for interesting or even compelling news stories.

It frustrates me how little thought newspapers currently appear to give to capitalizing on one of their greatest assets, their back archive. The N&O has in its archives 150 years of North Carolina history that you can't get to.

After decades of fulfilling the propaganda requests of the establishment elite, whether Democrat or Republican, as if there's much difference between the two, major newspapers seem shocked when the Internet's perceptive bloggers are more fascinating and revealing than newspapers' often one-sided statist views. In newspaper-land, government schools, vaccinations, and laws that limit freedom are celebrated.
