Charlotte's light rail has been wildly succcessful--ridership has exceeded all predictions, and transit-oriented development is springing up around the stations. If they can make it work there, we can make it work here.

This is a response to the comment that no one will use the light rail because they would have to pay to park their cars and then pay for the bus fair to get to work. First, the light rail stations would most likely be placed in conjunction with major bus routes, limiting the need to drive to the station and thus pay for parking.

The idea that "no one" in Houston rides the light rail system there is nonsense. The 7.5-mile light rail line serves an average of 40,000 riders a day, giving it the second-highest per-mile ridership in the nation.

A light rail system for the Triangle would be a huge waste of Taxpayer money because 99% of the Triangle's population will have to drive to get to the train! People will inevitably have to pay to park their cars and pay for the fare.

Any reader of The Independent will be able to list the numerous economic and environmental benefits a comprehensive transit system will bring to the Triangle. The main question now is how to fund the local portion of the construction investment.
