Gender isn't the same thing as biological sex. The terms indicate different qualities but unfortunately transgendered individuals use the terms interchangably even though they, more than anyone else, should know better.

According to psychologists and biologists both, "male" and "female" refer to sex, as in the sexual organs that you have, the sex that you were born. "Man" and "woman" refer to gender, which is defined by social and cultural norms of behavior that a person fits.

denisev is correct in defining GENDER as the way in which a person chooses to appear/behave... gender identity traditionally falls into 2 rigid socially-constructed categories of masculine and feminine (but is not limited to that.) male, which JohnD has correctly defined, refers to SEX/sexual identity, which is separate from gender.

In my book biology does not determine gender. While the American Heritage Dictionary uses biology: The sex of an individual, male or female, based on reproductive anatomy.

Btw, other people who read this article may wonder the same thing I wonder which since this guy is considered legally male by the state of Oregon and yet still has his original equipment under the hood, what exactly does "legally male" mean. This is the answer I found out on the internet (Yahoo Answers) that sounds correct.
