<![CDATA[Your argument is unconvincing at best. The problem is not just cows, but pigs as well, and the problem goes beyond simply cutting down rainforests (which our US tax dollars pay for, by the way, through the World Bank!).

<![CDATA[Thank you Suzanne and Indyweekly for this article - it clears up a lot of issues surrounding the production of animal products as well as my own decision to return to LOCAL dairy and occasional meat consumption after decades of veganism. I am happy to support small farmers who are doing things right for the animals and the planet.

<![CDATA[Both the column and the first commentators have missed the fact that world methane levels for the last few years are stable at about 1.7 parts per million. Livestock did not cause the increase in methane levels occuring at the time of the Kyoto protocol signing, that was mainly the leakage from Russian natural gas pipelines, and livestock are not increasing the levels of methane or CO2 now.

<![CDATA["And cows aren't really adding more methane to the planet so much as cycling what's already above ground. Methane emissions from enteric fermentation represent the transformation of carbon already in circulation between the earth and the atmosphere; whereas, burning fossil fuels always results in a net increase in carbon."
