This is a great article from a music history standpoint; well written with impressive references -- the writer knows his stuff. I'm the target market of these bands -- age 36, an early indie punk rocker turned technology executive, and have tickets for both shows. But I think it's unfair to ding artists like Black Francis or others for making money. While I thrashed around at Pavement and Bob Mould shows and body surfed at Sonic Youth way back when, I would hardly risk my Bruno Magli shoes, French handbag, or creaking knees doing that now. Francis' show last night had astounding raw energy and was well worth the $55 ticket. Unlike many of us, he earned a big payday making art, and I admire the hell out of that.
