I was disappointed to read the article “Dark Horse” (1-18-14) about Spence’s Farm. I had a wonderful experience there. I spent many after school hours learning how to face my fears. Spence taught me how to be in partnership with horses, play in the Eno River and channel Pocahontas. For me, as a five to ten year old, I admired Spence. He was calm, fearless and wise.
I was proud to have climbed Occoneechee Mountain. Even though I was scared, I knew Spence wasn’t going to let anything happen to me.
Thanks to Spence’s early introduction to the natural world, I recently graduated from UNC-G with a major in Environmental Studies.
It would be unfortunate if other children could not have the same experience because of unwarranted criticism.
