You spent 177 words rambling on about how much you disliked his past projects. I thought this review was about Mermaids? . The remaining 99 words, 30% of which are quotes from lyrics and not actual review content, leaves me wondering why you didn't explore the record in depth?
Silver lining is that I am now motivated to give the record a listen myself.
Tthe write up on Shawn Luby's the Giving was shockingly offensive, "Listening to a gentle singer with a supple tone and clear diction can feel like being slapped, softly, by a ballerina." WTH is that? Later in the piece she states that his voice is a predicament and a curse. Why is Shawn's voice a predicament? Robin, Barry Gibb, Elliott Smith and Jeff Buckley had similar melancholy falsetto qualities to their voices. She missed writing about Shawn's exquisite opening line in Acrobat's Affair. It's a beautiful moving metaphor. Who the hell misses that??? Someone would rather throw homophobic punches at the artist than to close their eyes and open their hearts . That song is powerful in its gentleness. That is what Humble Tripe is about. IW missed the mark, again.
