The NAACP and Rev Barber are really onto something here- The Republicans used what they called "the Southern Strategy" in the 1970s and ever since to fracture the "New Deal Coalition", which combined a lot of disparate elements based on common interests. Beginning with Nixon in 1968 (not coincidentally following the Civil Rights gains of the 1960s), race was used as wedge issue.
By understanding and communicating clearly that average people of all stripes (black, white, brown, red, yellow) have common interests, this coalition can be rebuilt and can effectively challenge the un-reconstructed, retrogressive Republican oligarchy that wants *us all* on the Corporate plantation.
