Population control advocates have always walked a fine line between engaging with the issue of resources becoming more ever more limited and bringing people into the movement who want an outlet to promote racist/colonialist agendas. As someone pointed out above, a culture of resource abuse and waste is also contributing to environmental degradation, not just sheer numbers of people. Humans beings are pretty resourceful, and really know how to hang on, so I think there can be movement towards using human ingenuity to promote better uses of the resources we have while encouraging ALL of us to take more responsibility for the protection of our environment.
I appreciate that this article points out something many forget - humans are complex and capable of doing lots of good and bad. And while that is part of what makes us human, always believing the good a person does cancels out the bad can have very limited value in moving humanity forward.
