Whilst I agree absolutely with your review of Taberna Tapas - it is indeed truly underwhelming - I do have a couple of quibbles with your review of Mateo. In particular the pan de tomate comments. I have now eaten at Mateo on six separate occasions since it's opening, and I personally find the bread with tomato sauce highly subtle and delicious! I was in Barcelona a year ago, and had very similar pan de tomate at more than one excellent tapas restaurant. If one wanted bread just to sop up the tasty sauces, why not simply just ask for bread? I have done this - when sitting at the bar at Mateo - and always received slices of fresh crusty bread. Excellent for sopping sauces. In fact I asked where they got the bread as it seemed so delicious, and was told that it's baked a mere two blocks away at Durham's Loaf bakery. I then went to Loaf and found they have several varieties of bread, all of which I've had time to try were tasty in the extreme. So it's not only hugely scrumptious but also very local, independent and fresh! When I do eat out these are the kind of foods I seek. Watts Grocery for example, gets a large amount of it's fresh meat & veg locally, and I think that's great. It's a good example for all Durham restaurants to follow, and many now do. Should we not encourage this practice? As for The New York Times comments, I am proud to live in such a thriving and burgeoning - food wise - community as Durham, and if the Yankees up north choose to sing it's praises, what the heck is wrong with that?! It surely indicates not Northern pomposity but seething envy!
