THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!!! I do not understand how lactose intolerant people are reviewing pizza. It is great those options are available at most, but do not understand why Lilly's and Mellow Mushroom, arguably some of the best in the triangle, are bashed while Frank's is praised. How is Klausie's food truck praised when the first three below aren't even considered, especially when their health rating is so low?
Lilly's - though the pizza has declined since the sale of the place years ago, it still ranks among the top pies. Their crust is one of the best in town, and they will always include Parmesan free of charge. I have eaten here for years, and tried almost everything on the menu. Definitely top shelf!
Mellow Mushroom - Usually Lilly's rival for gourmet pizza, they have some interesting combinations of their own. Sauce is always great, and crust is perfect as well. Wide variety of toppings like Lilly's, and I would give these two a toss up for which is truly better.
Bada Bing - WHY WERE THESE GUYS NOT MENTIONED?!?!?! The BEST NY style pizza in Raleigh. I've had Camo Bros, which is a close second, but none of the others even compare. Also, the reviewers mentioned Sicilian pizza at Frank's, but didn't even try it?!?!?! How can you vouch for something you haven't tried? Bada Bing's Sicilian is every bit as good as their thin crust if not better. Furthermore, the proprietor is a great guy and provides excellent customer service.
Frank's - I used to live in the neighborhood by this place, and after reluctantly patronizing them many times with my friends who have no clue what a good restaurant is, I refuse to return. Their watery pizza with canned toppings always disappoint. From thin to Sicilian, I have always been disappointed. I really have problems respecting any pizza joint that doesn't use fresh mushrooms, which would include these guys. I had really high hopes every visit, but finally gave up.
Bella Mia - Really great pizza, but overpriced. Never had anything here that wasn't great, but be ready to drop a dime if you really want to be full.
While not in the top, I can't believe Bocci in Cary & Durham were not even mentioned, while Moonlight, Amedeo's and Brixx were included which are all on my AVOID list.
I couldn't wait to read this article, as I am a pizza freak, but sadly this review has slashed my faith in the food critics at the Indy.
