Great pizza and great, friendly staff... they get it right on all fronts!
Re: “Lilly's Pizza in Durham lives in the shadow of its Raleigh sibling”
Really, the problem is that it's not gritty and dirty enough? I'm pretty sure you would bitch if it was 'gritty and dirty' ...And you are also bitching about the music? Lame. Sorry they weren't hipster enough (gag). I have eaten there regularly and find both the food and the service to be awesome... I also realize that they have not been open even 2 months and may be working out some kinks (which people like me can be patient with), but this review was just pissy and mean spirited... you order something with 5 meats and then bitch about the fact that it had too much meat, Plus, are you aware that prosciutto is ham CURED IN SALT? Of course it's salty! Sounds like you were nursing a grudge... where was there anything truly good that you had to say in your review? If so, sorry, I missed it in the whining. This review was so unbalanced that I have actually taken the time for the first time in my life to respond to a review based on how lame it was... ugh. (And by the way, this feeling has been shared by everyone I have spoken with about this article...)
And to Black Strong... you are right, what Durham needs is more pretentious, arrogant food holes, more hipster-esq eating joints that are just '"Durham-style" culturally inappropriate (Chicken and waffles is an L.A. thing, by the way... none of these places in Durham is "Durham-style", they are all rip-offs of somewhere else) ...not a place that actually tries to make the basics as good as they can. Sorry Lilly's isn't hipster chic enough for you, but they are just good people trying to do good food right... organic, local, and as good as they can with a new spin on pizza (i.e. - the crust, which I love)... maybe they should try and be more pretentious to fit into the new "Durham vibe" (which, having moved here from L.A. I find to be a joke... Durham, just be yourself and quit trying so hard to be N.Y. or L.A. and be yourself... it will pay off in the end)... I personally love Lilly's (specially Durham's which is friendly, clean, not smokey and gritty, and warm and inviting) and I will continue to recommend them to my friends, who are true foodies and not judgmental pretenders... but I wouldn't expect anything less in a review then arrogant dismissal and posturing from a rag like the the Indy and the hipsters that read it.
Leave Lilly's alone... they are good people trying to do their best. They rock and will one day be a Durham landmark... shame on you all for being mean and arrogant towards people that you don't know and a restaurant that you don't get.... your mean spiritedness speaks volumes about your shallow character...
