Thanks for the shout out to Bakersville, but I'd like to correct a couple of errors. The Mitchell County Gay Straight Alliance was started by a potter named Amy Waller and a 60 year old nurse (me) in October of last year. While individual Penland artists have been supportive, along with other members of the community since we started the GSA, it is Amy and myself who have done most of this work.
The Town Hall meeting we had with Jen Jones was anything but stormy, thanks to the determination of Jen and all of us speaking at the meeting to keep things respective and interactive. One gentleman who started to get worked up settled down immediately when asked to do so.
Penland artists have, however, recently come on board in a big way, donating art and art auction expertise to an event planned for tomorrow - http://mitchellcountygsa.wordpress.com/apa…
Our County Commission passed a resolution 3 days ago simply encouraging voters to go vote on May 8. They did this in response to being asked to pass a resolution in support of A1 by an area family values group. Mitchell County GSA organized speakers for the commissioners meeting, and recruited area businesses to call and email the commissioners before the meeting. The family values group was able to get resolutions supporting A1 passed in two adjoining counties. Watauga County also passed a resolution in support of A1. All of that happened this week and I feel really good about the work we are doing here in Mitchell County.
Here is the local newspaper story about that: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=30…
