From what I have read in the Bible (I am going though a chapter a day now, so I am not all the way through), I have not seen the word "marriage" defined per se. I see many men having sex outside of marriage, such as Abraham lying with Hagar when Sarah could not conceive, resulting in Ishmael, who was told he would father a great nation. God must be OK with that type of sex outside of marriage. Or how about Abraham's grandson Jacob who had 13 kids with 4 different women, two of them his wives and two their handmaidens (i.e., slaves)? Sounds like God was totally fine with that as well. I prefer that we define marriage, especially CIVIL (i.e state licensed) marriage, using a different litmus test than the Bible. If you want to define marriage for your own religious group in a different way- fine. If you want to tell me that a same sex marriage keeps me out of your church -- fine. However, you do NOT get to tell my church or synagogue how to define marriage and I CERTAINLY hope you are going to get a talking to at the pearly gates for your presumption to speak for God on who or what He hates and loves.
The results of Tuesday's election might solidify the sense of otherness with which I view my state and country. But my patriotism to my city has never been stronger.
