Thank you for coming and for noticing all those details. We are grateful to all of the artists (http://www.cocoacinnamon.com/cc2627hillsbo…) and David Solow art + design for creating the shop as living installation. Chuck grew up in the toy store his dad owned in Michigan and the sense of wonder he learned there has always stayed with him. Over the coming weeks, his objects will be installed around the space, a kind of science museum out from behind the glass at kid level. When Chuck presented the idea to us, he talked about wanting to let kids be in touch with that feeling of "something more," to elicit the beautiful curiosity children (and aritsts, scientists, inventors...) have. And the $100 he put down on the counter is now a tradition; it is for the community coffee fund, where anyone can get a drink off of the menu paid for by the community gift card. Chuck put the first $100 on it at 420 West Geer Street too! We'll be having a designer/artist talk or series (we're putting that together now) after all the works are in too. Thanks for taking part! We are incredibly grateful to Carol and Maryah, both of whom believed in us and played key roles in making Cocoa Cinnamon possible.

Slow Money was key in our making the final push to get open. Without it, we would have had to create a pre-beta category for opening - something far more skeletal than the way in which we have actually been rolling out. :)

Maryah has left her mark in the shop profoundly. Her work, gels with the other work in the shop to make a cabinet of curiosities/fixins station that is one of a kind and a key design element in the shop. Maryah made the glass compartment coffee table and headed a team of volunteers, even when extremely busy, the re-fashioning of our outdoor tables, made from the old window shutters at Brightleaf into new and quirkily shaped curved tables and benches.

We are incredibly grateful to both Maryah and Carol. Working with both of them has made our startup possible and much more fruitful.

Elizabeth (and Jeremy), thank you so much for covering Cocoa Cinnamon (again)!

And thanks for bringing family and friends.

The chocolates we use are single origin, so like single origin coffees they have distinct characteristics, which vary greatly. For the most part people come in and try a few different origins and find the range of what they like. We feature and rotate many of our items, so people can keep tasting new origins. A lot of people like to try and contrast different drinking chocolates the way they would our coffees. And we are still rolling out spice based signature drinks for the drinking chocolates, espresso based drinks and hand poured coffees.

We source milk locally from Homeland creamery. And milks change slightly in character depending on what the cows are eating. :) it's true. We've noticed it's a little grassier lately.

We made some headway in the outdoor seating department yesterday. We now have our first canvas covering rigged for the outdoor tables that Maryah Smith-Overman, Areli, William Lum and a team of folks hand built out of the wood from the old Brightleaf shutters. We just need to weld some loops on the table bases so we can lock them up at night and then we'll have a whole bunch more seating!

We are still in a beta unfolding process, so stay tuned, and thank you again so much for writing!

p.s. we came this way via Jackson county near the Smoky Mountain National Park....where there were more dogs than people. Our relationship to Durham goes back to 2001 via work.
