Ron Paul pulls in voters from across the divide and is the only candidate that is different than Obama and can beat Obama.

The GOP is worried that they will end up as 2nd tier in politics if Ron Paul gets the nomination.

But, since the independent voting block is larger than the GOP voting block, thy are already 2nd trier but just won't admit it to themselves.
