Let me say that as a gay man I "appreciate" the struggles of the transgendered and transsexual community. Everybody is an outsider to one degree or another. Those rigid "straightjacket" gender roles that we are taught cause a lot of pain, even to the ones who buy into them. And that's why your rhetorical question - "Is the anxiety of non-transgender people that they will be tricked actually a fear that sleeping with a transgender person could affect their own identity?" - merits a resounding, YES, OF COURSE! That's what's at the core of homophobia, the mistrust of one's own gender. Thanks for your thoughtful article.
