I've played, off and on, in Durham for almost 35 years. Back in the day, if you weren't in a band, you had to sit in with people who were or play in pick-up bands at parties. Now we have the Blue Note Grill's jam MCed by Butch Haas, an even-handed assembler of Tuesday night blues groups. Some players are veterans of the area's best-known blues bands, some are solid journeymen and some may not have played in front of a crowd before. All are welcome and all are encouraged.It's like going to a friend's house to play except Bill, Andrea and their generous staff serve up food so good that you'll throw your hat in the fire. And did I mention the array of local brews on tap? The Blue Note Grill is my favorite neighborhood bar. I just wish it was in my neighborhood.
