Guys, Brad Anderson has expressed that the metaphor of the movie is death - the fact that there are no explanations as to why, when or where it will happen nor what happens after death. The film has this tenor built in it. Hayden's character is selfishly motivated but along the journey he senses the need to change to right actions and right conduct which expresses itself when he drives back to retrieve James at the church. Thandies' character is one of medical professsional and Mom who is strongly torn by the two (thus the melodramatics). She is stuck in panic mode unable to move forward without Luke's input. John's character is one that had never been able to enter the world of people and relationships and is stuck in reverse. He's desperately desiring to go back and try. All of them have been plunked into this new reality and stress and fear rule rather than rational thinking. They blab about catholic guilt, dead batteries, or a generator that they fear will shut down. This movie forces you to THINK, place yourself in thier shoes and observe. The REAL reality is that they are working out their inner voices and how they view themselves without really realizing it. They are in the throws of their last gasp. I totally LOVED this movie and think it's an excellent additonal to Bard Anderson's brilliance, character development and movie analysis.
