I am thrilled that itzwitchy commented on alcoholism. My job stands to be lost by this ban. As does the jobs of my fellow coworkers. My mgr is a mother of 2 who has been able to spend every night w/ her children and provide a life for them that she once couldn't bc of our company. The players that we see every day aren't taking away from the mouths of their children. I don't know how all owners run their business; but this chain of sweepstakes cafes certainly does not allow our customers to ruin their lives. We are very close within our communities. We support the local sheriff's departments w/ yearly contributions, we donate to local church organizations, we buy food from local bbq/bake/ sales, we host different drives. We're on a first named basis w/ each and every customer. Every weekend we have several players that just gather here to socialize bc they don't want to be home alone. We listen to them, we become their friends, we are invited out w/ their families, we all reach out helping hands when any of our customers or employees needs advice, help moving, help understanding something, etc. These cafes are not just owned and operated by heartless persons seeking to destroy homes and families. In fact, it is quite the opposite. And, I assure you, NC legislators and the General Assembly isn't a bit more concerned about your family's well-being than DSS. They dare not to say a word about the addiction to alcohol or tobacco products. Why? Because NC would be in a crucial financial crisis if they were to lose the taxes gained by that merchandise. When assessing these situations, one can't be so personal. If there is one or few families suffering due to one's addiction to gambling, yes it is sad, indeed. But as a whole, that isn't what this industry is about. My father lays in a nursing home dying from alcoholism, cirrhosis of the liver, a lifetime of drinking & drugging. A lifetime of decisions that put my siblings and I through pure hell. But, I don't regret it. And I understand that NC will never ban alcohol due to the addiction, never ban cigarettes just bc people are being diagnosed w/ COPD, cancer, dying daily from it (as was my mother). The ONLY reason this ban has been passed thus far, is bc if/when it is legalized w/ an effective system of taxation, the legislators pockets grow a little bit bigger....
