A more accurate review by Edward Warner. Sorry Mr. Reed, let's be fair.
SCUMFEST 2010 / CABOOSE re-union Party !!!!!
What is This?
The Caboose was a little rock club / beer joint / biker bar / redneck bar / pool hall in Garner NC. Could have been any number of dives any place in NC. One huge difference though. Between 1994 - 1999 The Caboose brought many underground punk/hardcore & metal acts big & small to its stage. Those not old enough to remember may find it odd to think that there was few options for any kind of extreme rock n roll in the Raleigh area or even the triangle. Indeed many of the acts that played the Caboose during this time period , Literally could not get booked anywhere else in Raleigh, Durham , Chapel Hell or even North Carolina!! The Caboose specialized in putting on
shows with extreme metal, Hardcore punk, Shock Rock, as well as some good old southern rock, Garage rock, and even some stuff that was just plain weird ! Seems strange to me now. These days Raleigh has many rock clubs to choose from. Hardcore Punk & Extreme Metal are downright accepted as part of the triangle music scene. The Caboose was not the only place that pioneered this. But 94-99 We played a huge role.
What is / was the Scumfest? In 1995 wanting to showcase the bands WE thought should get some attention. We threw a party and had some of the best local acts perform. Of course the local entertainment coverage was to almost completely ignore this party. Except for one local indie rock clown who remarked-Caboosefest? They should call that Scumfest... Other comments regarding rednecks, punk rockers and how uncool it was to like metal. In 1996 Scumfest it was ! See at the time as well some of the most interesting stuff going on in the rock n roll underground was the Confederacy Of Scum bands. Taking a cue from bands like ANTiSEEN (Caboose regulars) Cocknoose, Rancid Vat etc. We decided to have three days of the most extreme punk & metal acts we could get. We cooked a pig and had free eastern NC style BBQ for everybody. Tons of bands. Some contests and plenty of beer guzzling mayhem. Each year the Scumfest grew in size. Bigger names played and the local weeklies continued to ignore it. Thats How Cool this event is! Seriously though, if your looking for the cool hip show to go to on this weekend, do us a favor and go somewhere else. This show is for old friends, new friends, fans of loud wild hard and heavy rock n roll & people looking to have fun !!! 100% indie rock hipster free !! We don't fit in and we don't want to.
Who has played the Caboose and or the Scumfest in the past? ANTiSEEN, Blanks 77, Patriot, Suspects, UK Subs, Deceased, Darkmoon, Nile, Varukers, Automag, Black Oak Arkansas, Lamb Of God, Kilara, Alabama Thunderpussy, Spirit Caravan, Crisis, The 440s, SPO-ITs , Frankenstein Drag Queens, Melt Banana, Incantation, Krisiun, Jeff Dahl are just a few names. As well as many many of the best local punk & metal acts of the time period. But that was then. So whats now?

7th Legend has it that the SPO-ITs set at the Scumfest got the Caboose shut down, We can't confirm or deny any of that. But we have taken steps to issure they won't be getting Volume 11 shut down , Besides Raleigh law is cooler then Garners ha ha ha . The SPO-ITs at one time were one of the best known & extreme underground shock rock bands. Touring with Gwar, Mentors, Buzzoven, and others. Appearances on Jerry Springer, Arrests , Bannings, XXX madness !! Their history with the Scumfest & Caboose is well documented. With the closing of the Caboose & bannings from so many venues The SPO-ITs disbanded in 1999. Now after a sucsessful re-union gig in GA. The SPO-ITs return to the scene of the crime ha ha ha , Bring a TV to smash ! Take Your clothes off !! or just watch the insanity. Theres no telling what they have planned for You !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Again the entire day will be hosted by Sandi Ra Ra & Pabstman , Perhaps some special performances from others who knows!
Fridays show is $10 , Saturdays is $15 thats not too much to ask for a show like this. So please Pay to get in. Production costs for a show like this are high and Some of these bands have traveled quite a distance. It would be nice to be able to pay them. Perhaps You might even buy a shirt or CD off them? And thank Volume 11 for allowing a show like this to happen by buying lots of beer & supporting their other great shows !!!
See Ya Freaks At SCUMFEST 2010 / CABOOSE re-union Party !!!!!!!!!
North Carolina law provides that "each member of the Council of State, each justice of the General Court of Justice, and each judge of the General Court of Justice shall be liable to impeachment for the commission of any felony, or the commission of any misdemeanor involving moral turpitude, or for malfeasance in office, or for willful neglect of duty".
Arguably, turning down the expansion and subjecting so many of our citizens to unnecessary suffering is a willful neglect of duty on the part of all of our representatives that voted to turn down the expansion. Personally, I say off with their heads, but at least impeachment is a start.
The NCSU Department of Entomology has detailed information about identifying and treating bedbugs.
He's not 17, he's been working for the DOT for 17 years.
Nick, I don't think that Jeff believes his children should get better treatment than any others, but that all children should have an equal opportunity to a quality education. The issue of neighborhood schools has not gone away simply because of the election. The newly elected school board needs to take seriously the concerns of these parents whose children are sent miles away when there are schools much closer to their homes.
Busing contributes to our consumption of limited fossil fuels and pollution. However, there is no evidence to show that it contributes to sufficiently increased test scores for those affected directly by busing. At some point, we have to come to the realization that the costs outweigh the benefits of continuing the status quo.
It's issues like these that pull progressives and independents like myself away from the Democratic party when the party is too blinded by a perceived political correctness without being open minded enough to see the big picture. I will not stand to have my child suffer up to two hours on a school bus daily to satisfy a failed policy. There has to be a middle ground on which we can all agree that provides a quality education for all regardless of where a school is located.
Tboz...just a clarification. Felons can vote in North Carolina if they are no longer serving an active sentence or are on probation or parole. However each state is different with regard to voting rights. Some states have an outright prohibition on felons voting, while others allow felons to vote while incarcerated.
For more information about felon voting rights, visit www.ncpls.org/Access/oct08.pdf
I am surprised that a progressive newspaper like the Independent would endorse a constitutional amendment providing that no person convicted of a felony may serve as sheriff.
If a person's past is tarnished enough to preclude them from serving as sheriff, so be it. However, an outright prohibition on anyone convicted of a felony without the opportunity to discuss and/or debate the matter may preclude an otherwise worthy candidate from becoming sheriff. Perhaps that same individual's unique experiences with the criminal justice system would serve them, and us, well as sheriff.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, an estimated 1 of every 15 persons (6.6%) will serve time in a prison during their lifetime. These numbers do not reflect the total number of felons as some never serve time in prison. All of these people would be affected by the constitutional amendment that you endorse.
North Carolina's population is approximately 9.4 million people, 6.6% of which is approximately 625,000 likely felons within the State. I can't imagine, amongst this significant number of people, that there is not a handful of candidates that this proposed amendment would disservice. If otherwise qualified, they should be allowed to answer for their pasts in a public forum rather than be foreclosed entirely from serving their communities.
For Shame Indy...For Shame.
Maintaining the current busing plan in an effort to achieve diversity is just as flawed as scrapping it entirely for "attendance zones".
I live in downtown Raleigh. My child is to be sent to Leesville High School according to the current busing plan, approximately 20-25 minutes away. This doesn't even take into consideration the multiple stops which are likely to add an additional 15-20 minutes to the daily commute, a potential 1.5 hours per day travelling to and from school.
I am concerned about diversity, but I am also concerned about natural resources and pollution. How much could our carbon footprint be reduced if my child, and children like him, were sent to a school within a reasonable distance from home while still trying to achieve diversity?
Furthermore, I assume the current busing system considers my child to be anything but white as Leesville High is a predominantly white school. However, my child is white which defeats the purpose of busing for diversity purposes while still putting a strain on our natural resources, environment and my child's time to do things other than ride a bus for 1.5 hours daily.
None of the commissioners seem to be addressing this issue. It's simply, no pun intended, black or white. Diversity is a noble goal to achieve, but it should not come at the expense of everything else. There has to be a compromised solution that encourages diversity while at the same time taking into account other important issues as well.
