Next time -- and there will always be a next time because black snakes are nest predators -- wait until the snake is "stomach laden with take home", catch it, and release it elsewhere. The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission might be consulted for legal relocation suggestions and whether or not a nuisance wildlife permit is required. The snake is an animal not unlike your dog, who would also undoubtedly "steal" a favorite food if left unmonitored.
