Re: “Heels sputter in ACC opener versus Cavaliers

That's certainly a possibility, and I wouldn't be shocked if they finish even worse. On the other hand, based on raw talent I think they should finish ahead of FSU, UVa and Miami, but I agree they've underperformed thus far.

Re: “Commentary: ACC will struggle to get five bids

Good thoughts here. From my perspective on the UNC beat, I think the Heels must win 11 games to ensure a tournament bid. I suspect 10-8 would may them in as well (UNLV helps), but their strength of schedule is too poor to earn an at-large bid with a .500 record. We're ignoring the ACC Tournament, of course, but so has UNC recently and with far better teams. (!)

Re: “Point guard confusion escalates for Tar Heels

Hillpeople:

Experience accrues even during bad seasons. You made the point about Felton in 2003, and effectively he faced a second freshman season learning Roy Williams' system in 2004, another relative down year for UNC. And all of that added up to a title the following season.

Thad covered several of the other points. Frankly, the article you linked is silly. No one ever expected Thomas or Drew to match Felton or Lawson, and no amount of playing time would have bridged the talent disparity.

Lawson beat out Frasor on merit; Strickland also arguably deserves to beat out Paige on merit. I understand the developmental issue — for this season, not just later years — but a poor ACC start could sink this team.

Re: “Why does the ACC basketball preseason last forever?

This column anticipated the UNC/ETSU snoozer perfectly. I don't write these games off completely because fans who ordinarily can't afford the expense get a chance to attend games in person, but from a competitive and developmental standpoint, they are horrible.

Re: “Promise Unmet: Heels fall to Kansas in Elite Eight

Thanks for the response, Michael.

I thought about that but excluded that team because they underachieved for much of the season. Apart from the Duke games, they largely went through the motions and never demonstrated the determination that this team did.

There was something wrong with those guys. Granted, this team had its low points, too, but they seemed to have hit their stride prior to Marshall's injury. One man's opinion.

Re: “Duke overcomes UNC's blistering first half, emerges victorious

Nice report, Joe!

I thought this was the most entertaining and competitive Duke/UNC game since 2008.
