Re: “House Republicans target illegal immigrants with ID ban, expand gun laws

Wow.. glad to see the Republicans are laser focused on jobs, and not wasting time (and money) on controversial partisan bills. I am also glad to see the Republicans are rolling back government intrusion into businesses and local municipalities.. what's that.. the gun bill is telling businesses and towns what they can and cannot do about allowing firearms into facilities they (supposedly) control? My mistake, I must have been recalling what the said they would do, not talking about what they are actually doing.

Re: “The SBI: Another reason to oppose the death penalty

There was a rigorous statistical analysis conducted by independent statisticians at a University in Michigan. Numbers are not social elites, they do not play the race card, nor do they have an agenda. Moreover, numbers do not have to speculate, throw out charged language, or be insulting to make a point. The numbers show, quite clearly, that race plays a factor in who gets the death penalty, and who does not. Is the racism intentional, probably not, except for the DA who wore a noose pin while trying a black man in a capital case. Intent is irrelevant, however. All that matters is making the death penalty colorblind, or getting rid of it entirely if it cannot be fairly administered.

Re: “Duke Law School helps exonerate wrongfully convicted Shawn Massey, who served 12 years in prison

A great success for the Duke Wrongful Convictions Clinic, and for Shawn Massey. Moreover, this proves that the State and the various Innocence Projects at our law schools can cooperate to fix the mistakes that inevitably occur despite the best intentions of our police and prosecutors.

I hope and pray this is just the beginning for the Duke Wrongful Convictions Clinic. There are no doubt more innocent people in prison that need help.

Re: “John Temple's The Last Lawyer

Wow.. I read this book review expecting the standard discussion of the quality of the writing or the story, but instead, I was subjected to an oddly personal attack on a local lawyer and non-profit. The tone of the review is all the more bizarre given how the reviewer decries character assassination by engaging in.. well.. character assassination. I found particularly appalling the reviewer's assertion "that Jones' absolute human value to the CDPL is, like the true identity of the killer, fundamentally unimportant." If the reviewer had any actual knowledge of capital defense or the people at CDPL, he might understand how incredibly hateful, hurtful, and false his words were. Indeed, it is the "absolute human value" of all people, including those the State is trying to kill, that motivates capital defense lawyers like those at CDPL and elsewhere to try and save their client's lives. Mr. Sobsey, if you were intentionally trying to to hurt good people with your words, you could not have chosen them better. Please consider retracting your statements suggesting that the people at CDPL do not value their clients as human beings. Nothing could be more offensive, and further from the truth.
