I think what the school board is doing is a good thing. I tried to apply for year-round and was denied because of diversity. Maybe people should focuse on what is going on in their neighborhood schools before deciding to bus them all over the county.
The school also needs to keep in mind that they serve the entire county not just Raleigh and Cary. Living in Southern Wake where there is no longer a Magnet and no Charters doesn't leave many options for the parents. I know folks in Raleigh are whining about Magnet schools losing their status well mine did and I fought it tooth and nail.
Schools need to be updated. The brand-new schools look great with all the computers, books and class rooms. Maybe we could try to update our older schools and make them year around and stop building. That migh save some money????
Re: “Wake County goes to hell”
I think the title of this article is a little strong. I mean really??? If the school didn't take away magnet programs in lower income areas of wake county 3 years ago folks may not be so upset. I am really tired of people making this a diversity or racial issue. When are parents going to take responsibility for their children, their actions and their community. I think we all need to grow up and stop whinning. What ever happened to unbiased reporting??? I am not a liberal or a conservative. I tend to think Independently. So if our parents could start acting like parents and take a vested interest in their children's education, their community, and act like parents we would all be better off. Finally, about 90% of wake county children are assigned to a school within 10 miles from their street address. So, what is all the fuss about???
