so anyone reading this in the future can have a dose of reality following the last comment.
1.) The french quarter and portions of the CBD in New Orleans were built well over 200 years ago. The Carrolton area uptown, the second large township, was established in 1833. There were no levees. it is not possible for it to be under seas level by 12 feet.
2.) 51% of Orleans Parish is at or above sea level. The lowest point in Orleans parish is 8 feet bellow sea level.
3.) the areas bellow sea level were developed and populated with federal subsidies in the early to mid 20th century.
4.) two-thirds of orleans parish carried flood insurance when katrina hit, more than any other coastal or flood prone community in the country.
5.) 1/5 of the nations domestic oil comes from southern louisiana. Louisiana sees virtualy no money from this when compared to other oil rich states.
6.) historically the center of the USA couldn't have been developed without the port of New Orleans. there would have been very little way for commerce to develop given the lack of planes, cars, and trains.
I hope this makes people think long enough to see why this city is here. If you look carefully at some of the reasons above you may note they still have relevance to varying degrees.
