Here is the great difference between democrats and conservatives. Democrats want everything decided based on the physical characterisitcs of the people involved. That's how they keep their voting blocks. Conservatives want to judge based on peoples behavior, not what they look like.
When are we going to get past the point of viewing everything in society through the perspective of race? We have come a long way since the 50's. As long as our government keeps mandating we view everything based on racial groups, we can never expect society to stop. It's time we start following the constitution and simply treat everyone the same, based soley on what they personally have done.
Common sense dictates that when you need to cut your budget you first prioritize your spending, then cut the lowest priority items first. Once we see what our politicians plan to cut we can be sure that they are doing one of two things. They either consider our kids the lowest priority in the state, or they are trying to punish us for not giving them more money. In either case, they need to be voted out.
I agree with you on many points, especially your points about sound bites. Sound bites break complex issues down into mindless rhetoric. If however you are going to go into detail, it helps if you provide the truth. The reason Sotomayer is being accused of being a racist is not solely due to that single statement, but to a long pattern of racist statements, letters and rulings. Whether a Supreme Court justice is liberal or conservative is of far les importance that whether or not they have integrity. Sotomayer has a very questionable history in that regard and anyone other than blind partisans should be very concerned about that.
What's going on in NC politics is a great example of why news organizations should NEVER blindly side with any political party. Politicians of both parties are often in a position where they have to decide between self interest and the people. When the media consistently covers for and justifies everything one party does, there is no accountability and therefore the self interest decision becomes easy. Perhaps the real culprits here are our publications and media that have neglected their prime responsibility as watchdog over ALL politicians, and instead became the lapdogs of one party.
The article states that partisan newspapers are not new. That is true. If you look at the Adams/Jefferson Presidential campaign you will find they each "bought" slanted coverage to slander the other. Although partisan reporting has always existed, it is interesting to note that at the time of Adams and Jefferson, they had to seek out known "corrupt" editiors to get their stories worded in their favor. Unfortunately, what used to be considered corrupt reporting is now accepted as the norm.
The only way the people of a country can maintain control over the government is if they are accurately and factually informed about what the government officials are doing. The number 1 reason our govenment is a corrupt as it is, is because our news media picks and chooses which politicians to help rather than being completely open and factual.
Re: “Anna Elena Worley”
What doesn't she understand about the balance of powers? The Legislature makes the laws. A judge has NO right to use their opinions to modify the law based on who is before her.
