Re: “How the electric car will save us

ELECTRIC CARS AREN'T THE ANSWER; AT LEAST NOT THE WHOLE ANSWER. IF YOU CHOOSE TO LIVE IN AN URBAN SETTING, KNOCK YOURSELF OUT. BUT IF YOU SUDDENLY DECIDE TO VISIT GRANDMA 570 MILES AWAY OVER A WEEKEND, THEN WHAT DO YOU DO? OR IF YOU'RE HALFWAY TO WORK AND REALIZE THAT YOU FORGOT YOUR ATTACHE CASE... OR YOUR WIFE WANTS YOU TO PICK UP SOME CHINESE ON THE WAY HOME, OR YOU DON'T WANT SOME PIN HEADED, PENCIL NECKED BUREAUCRAT "TELLING" YOU WHERE TO LIVE... OR YOU DECIDE TO BUY A 2012 FERRARI 458 ITALIA, AN ALFA ROMEO BRERA S, OR A DODGE CHARGER SRT8...
THE VAST MAJORITY OF AMERICANS HAVE A POWERFUL LIBERTARIAN BENT. THEY DON'T WANT ANYONE TELLING THEM HOW TO LIVE; PERIOD. AND THEY BUILD AS MUCH FREEDOM AND FLEXIBILITY INTO THEIR LIVES AS THEY POSSIBLY CAN. ELECTRIC CARS SIMPLY DON'T FIT INTO THAT FRAMEWORK, AND PROBABLY NEVER WILL. THE INCONVENIENCES ARE MASSIVE, AND THEY DON'T COME CLOSE TO MATCHING THE FLEXIBLE NATURE OF PETROL POWERED CARS. WHETHER I WANT TO DRIVE TO THE NEAREST QUICKIE-MART OR LA, IT REALLY DOESN'T MATTER. ABOUT EVERY 350-MILES, I STOP AND FILL UP THE TANK. (TEN MINUTES, MAX.). AND IF HALFWAY TO LA I DECIDE TO GO SEE THE WORLD'S BIGGEST BALL OF YARN, I CAN GO DO THAT AS WELL. NO SWEAT.
IF YOU'RE ALL GOO GOO EYED ABOUT DEEP SEA DRILLING, WE CAN USE OIL-SHALE INSTEAD; OR NATURAL GAS; OR ONHORE DRILLING. ALL ARE LESS TECHNICALLY DEMANDING AND LESS PRONE TO ENGINEERING FAILURES. ALL ARE CHEAPER AND VERY PLENTIFUL AS WELL. BUT HERE'S THE BEST PART. THEY'RE ALL RIGHT HERE IN OUR OWN BACK YARD. IF YOU DESPERATELY WANT TO LIVE AN INCREDIBLY BLAND, COLORLESS AND LIMITED LIFE... BUY YOURSELF AN ELECTRIC CAR. JUST STAY OUT OF THE PASSING LANE. YOU'LL PROBABLY BE KICKED TO THE CURB.
