It's been over 10 years since I lived in Durham, but hearing about John Waters' visit is yet another reason I miss it. (So is the Independent...) I tell people who ask about Durham that it attracts a great selection of visiting talent because it's such a cool, progressive town, so I give credit and belated thanks to whomever it is that makes events like this happen because I know they don't just happen by themselves.
