Before you read this, this letter is about animal welfare. Human welfare is not what this discussion is about. Not that most people really care, but animals can sense death. If you think they don't know what is going on in "death row," then you are sadly mistaken. Pick up any book about WW II and read about the gas chambers. Gassing animals is the same thing, the same horrors, just on a smaller scale. How would any of you like to be dumped in a room with 5 or 6 other people and have to watch them choke to death as you are doing the same ? The word "mercy" apparently has changed its definition. But, then again, mercy is not really the prime concern at these yes-kill shelters. Their prime concern is getting rid of these unwanted animals, obviously. That is their job. The solution to all of this debate over unwanted pets and strays is so simple. If our state would put as much effort into developing a cheap, or free, spay/neuter program as it does spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to murder these poor animals, then eventually these problems would solve themselves. It would take co-operation from officials and the public alike. I say to all my fellow citizens that it's time for a call to action. It's time to demand our city, county and state officials account for their actions and make this a priority instead of just a nusance. If they had taken action 20 years ago, the situation would bound to be better than it currently is. Think about it------------a no-kill shelter with 1,000 animals in it. And, you have the nerve to say that a spay/neuter program is bogus, or whatever ? I know we have a half-baked program in place now, but it's not as cheap as they would have you believe. Most important of all, it doesn't appear to be working very well, now does it ? There will always be people who have animals but don't respect them and probably wouldn't even bother to participate in the low-cost, or free, spay neuter program. However, I honestly feel that the majority would as long as it is made affordable and easy to do. Can't we at least give it a chance ? These unwanted cats and dogs only want someone to love them, yet many spend their entire lives behind bars. What other group can claim that they are executed despite ALWAYS being totally innocent of any wrongdoing, and their executioners know it. Despicable.
