I'd actually rather be driving my Studebaker pickup, but it's still a work in progress .
There is a LOT of oil in North America, two of our leading suppliers are Mexico and Canada, and if the government would get out of the way we could be producing a lot more of our own oil. (No, NOT hands off, we need reasonable regulations reasonably enforced, but get out of the way!)
My thoughts exactly, you can buy just about everything for those trucks out of catalogs. That thing could be rebuilt to be better than new for a lot less than the cost of a new truck.
And isn't the mantra something like "renew, reuse, recycle"? Refurbing an old truck is easier on the environment that building a new one.
I'm doing it myself, although my Studebaker truck is a bit older and a bit harder to get parts for!
The Tesla is a very cool little car, but it is VERY small and VERY expensive, plus of course it still has a relatively limited range (which is even more limited if you use heat, AC and lights) and takes a long time to recharge.
Aside from AC the day to day stuff most people expect a car to do my 71 VW Beetle does better than that $110,000 sports car... of course the Tesla is a bit faster!
Tomgee makes a very good point. We have LOTS of natural gas, and there are thousands of cars and trucks on the road TODAY using it.
It's clean burning, engines last longer, it's cheap, it's plentiful and we don't have to get it from countries that hate us.
It also makes a LOT more sense then electric cars, not only can a car using CNG be refueled quickly but existing cars can be converted... why I could even convert my Studebaker truck to run on the stuff!
When I can buy an electric car for about the same price as a gasoline powered one, can drive it for 300+ miles at night, in a cold rain (with wipers, heater and lights going), recharge it in less than five min. and then do another 300 miles... all of which my 71 VW can do, then I'd be interested.
Right now there is NOTHING that beats plain old gasoline for the amount of energy that can be packed into a gallon (or pound if you prefer), oil is the transportation fuel that runs our civilization and it will be for some time to come.
CNG comes close though, and as Kevin pointed out it's cheap and domestically produced, and there is a LOT of it.
That's not to say electrics don't have a place, they are great (and getting better) as in town cars or for people who have very short commutes, but it's going to be a long time before the family Truckster is electric.
And... if you let your "tank" run dry you can't walk to a recharging station and get a gallon of electricity to get going again.

I loved the old N&O forums, and the paper was providing a great service to the community with them. I tried to go into the changes with an open mind knowing that change is inevitable, but the more I used it the less I liked it... and deleting all those old posts was just unconscionable.
Most of us have moved on, either to the new Triangle Free Forum or the Eastern NC Forums (or both), both of which are examples of what the N&O SHOULD have done (except for some of ENC's filtering) instead of what the DID do.
