Lets not forget Numbers Chapter 5: 11-31. Abortion in the Bible. Who would have thought?

Re: “Forgiving is not forgetting in Ariel Dorfman's Death and the Maiden

I'm wondering why Dorfman specifically chose the Death and the Maiden quartet - deriving from the song Der Tod und das Maedchen? Perhaps a direct metaphor to Paulina and Roberto, or something else?

Re: “The Durham-Orange Light Rail Now Costs More Than $3 Billion, and Durham Will Have to Pay More of It

First, $3.3 billion is too much for a 17 mile light rail line. It parallels an existing railroad. There are no major engineering challenges. Other US cities have built similar light rail lines for $1 billion, European cities have built similar light rail lines for more like $300 million.

Second, the Triangle area is very low density and not likely to generate much transit ridership besides low-income people and students. This project would be of questionable value at $1 billion. It is certainly not worthwhile at $3.3 billion. Kill it and spend the money on better bus service instead.

Re: “Local Film Under Contract Highlights the Human Story Behind the Chicken in Your Biscuit

Thank you for covering how the brutality of industrial farming affects human farmers and their neighbors in this story and in "PIgs in Slop" (also in this issue). I'm sorry neither article mentioned the suffering of the animals in these hell holes, although the photo above of chickens stacked layer upon layer in tiny cages hints at the situation. Indy readers can stop supporting these and similar abuses to humans and animals by not buying meat, eggs, or dairy. I agree with grower Craig Watts, quoted above, that this affects all of us, but not because the beings he raises are food. The United Nations's report Livestock's Long Shadow found that more climate-change gases come from the livestock sector than from the transportation sector.…

Re: “House ABC Committee Hears Beer-Cap Arguments

How does the comment about "preventing overly aggressive marketing" even make sense? By far, the most aggressive marketers are the Big 3 (Miller-Bud-Coors) who are the major patrons of the Wholesalers. They flood the airwaves with advertising. Also, being forced to use a distributor doesn't prevent a Craft Beer from marketing itself however it wants --- it just means that these small businesspeople have less revenue to grow and compete.

Re: “Durham Is North Carolina’s Hippest City, According to Vogue, Which Would Definitely Know These Things

A rising tide does not float all boats. Downtown has gentrified at the expense of the working class people who built it and the middle class people who once owned its stores and restaurants. For me, living in the "new Durham" feels like being married for 54 years to a town that's suddenly declared itself transurban, undergone hasty surgery, and started bringing home a lot of people who are convinced they're way cooler than I am.

Re: “Full Frame: Dina Is Earning Acclaim for Its Portrait of Love and Autism. But Is It Illuminating or Exploitative?

I haven't seen the movie, so I won't comment on the reading of the documentary. Just want to say that according to many autistic self-advocacy groups and neurodiversity models of disability, wishing for an alternative film that "emphasizes" a figure's "triumph over the adversities" of autism has its own problems. This wish has its roots in the medical model of disability which treats cognitive difference as disease and therefore something to be fixed and a moral model which treats disability as something an individual can "triumph over." Both models shield autism from understanding by the general populace and perpetuate the notion that geneticists and individual gumption are all that's needed when what is really lacking is education of the non autistic and the funding of social programs for the disabled.

BTW, I see that Indy Week expresses the right to remove comments that include ad hominem attacks. Do you remove blogs that include them as well? Oh the irony.

Re: “Durham Is North Carolina’s Hippest City, According to Vogue, Which Would Definitely Know These Things

My problem with these kind of articles is how superficial they are. A great food scene is undoubtedly correlated with being a "hip" city, but is it really the reason why, Vogue? Journalists who want to proclaim Durham the next "it" town should actually spend more than a weekend, talk to the people who live here, and try to look past the restaurants and places to get a drink. Then they might actually start to figure out why Durham is so awesome and what caused those places to crop up to begin with.

Where's your argument for how the band is apolitical (not that I disagree) and why it's relevant? It seems like a personal beef to me.
