Re: “Habitat for Humanity of Durham Youth United Battle of The Bands

Youth United Battle of the Bands is a family friendly event featuring some of the best on-the-rise youth bands from the Triangle. Bands will battle for the top two awards on the main stage at Motorco. A panel of music professionals and the crowd will determine the winners. In addition to awesome live music, concessions including pizza and cupcakes will be sold at the event. This is a fundraiser for Youth United Habitat house builds. Durham based Merge Records and ReverbNation are helping to sponsor the event. Admission is $10 at the door and presale tickets are available for $5 at www.purplepass.com/yubob.

Re: “Cabaret

I saw this play last night. While Taylor Mac was absolutely astonishing as the Emcee, he practically carried the show by himself. The lead actress was a lovely singer but she had no chemistry with her love interest.
But the biggest distraction was the design of the production. If this was 1930s Germany there was hardly a clue to that in the costumes and staging. I was trying to figure out if they had tried to stage Nazi Germany in a different era. The chorus was dressed and coiffed in a style for some period I could not identify. I found the production to be entirely too American in feel and it distracted from the story,

Re: “Ninety Miles with Stefon Harris, Nicholas Payton & David Sánchez

Went to the 7pm show which lasted all of an hour. Band was not tight at all and to me sounded like they could crash and burn at any moment. Nic Payton is great even if he was just playing scales. David Sanchez sounded atonal and discordant whenever he played which was not much. Stefon Harris sounded pretty good and looked like he was having a good time. The percussionist and his vocals were almost embarrassing. The bass sounded very muddy and one note like a bad subwoofer which the sound system and mix was more to blame for than the musician. In this small venue I believe they could have pulled off an "unplugged" set and it would have sounded better. Disappointed in the amount of time they played, the sound and the performance.

Re: “Final Neu Romance with DJ Herbert Holler

Don't know if you heard already, but Neu Romance is ending. Yes, again! :) The last Neu Romance will be on Saturday April 13, which also happens to be its 10-year anniversary!

We're having the finale party at Five Star. It starts at 8pm on Saturday so people can come out even if they aren't late-night folks. We'll have the Neu Romance DJs playing classic NR tunes, as well as a special guest later on, DJ Herbert Holler from the Freedom Dance Party in NYC. Should be super fun! And like every other Neu Romance, there's no cover!

So I'm emailing all the old-school Kings and NR folks to get the word out. We should get everyone together for some reminiscing, hanging-out, and dancing! I'll have some videos and pictures of the old parties, Pink Beats and all the rest... including many which have never been seen before in public or anywhere else!

We would love to see your smiling face!

And be sure to check out Chico's amazing description of the long history of Neu Romance! (below)

Love,
Drew
