Re: “Will Donald Trump’s Collapse Drag Down These Five N.C. Republicans?

I know it's a little late, but to note the Indy's crystal-ball gazers and analyzers of Tar Heel state politics weren't only fooled (as were 99% of pollsters) re: 2016 national election results after prematurely handing the U.S. presidency to the Wicked Witch of the North, but they similarly were of touch with ordinary, middle-class America in this state. Thus Mssr. Blest's can take comfort in knowing his analysis of NC races was not singular inaccurate (the lesson, I suppose, is to not give credence to cocktail party jokes among fellow travelers as gospel). Unfortunately for a lot of people, the devil's still in the details.

To wit:

(1) Blest correctly predicted 1 of 5 races above, the Cynthia Ball (D) N.C. Senate victory over incumbent Gary Pendleton in District 49. Even in the world of baseball, a Mendoza line (.200) hitter stands to be released soon, unless he has power, speed and an outstanding arm.

(2) Repubs Tamara Barringer and Chad Barefoot won in Districts 17 and 18, respectively, as did Chris Malone (R) in the D35 House race;

(3) Incumbent Richard Burr (R) rolled over Deborah Ross (D) in the U.S. Senate competition, regardless of her ads detailing Burr's $$ deals. When Ross couldn't deny Burr's ads charging she had been an ACLU lawyer who fought mandatory sentences for rapists, promoted gun control and defended flag-burners, she was swept off the cliff. (A parochial observation: flag-burning may be protected by the Supreme Court as political expression, but it's like spitting in the face of families who have grieved for sons and daughters who gave their lives to protect freedom and stand against dictatorships around the world. No candidate can bring that kind of rubber knife to a gun fight and expect to survive).

Some more interesting post-election facts:

(1) If Pat McCrory wins a recount, NC will be one of 23 tri-fecta states in the US (governor, senate, house controlled by Republican Party).
(2) If McCrory wins, the Dems will have 6 trifecta states.
(3) If McCrory loses, the Repubs will have 22 trifecta states.
(4) In the NC House, the count is 74 Repubs and 45 Dems. The Dems picked up 1 seat in the House while the Repubs remained at 74.
(5) Dems had 31 election races in the NC House in 2016 with 0 (zero) opponents. Repubs had 29 such races.
(6) Republican newcomers in the NC House -- Mike Clampett (D119) and Cody Hensen (113) defeated incumbents Joe Queen (D119) and Maureen Copelo (113). Democrat Mary Belk (D88) and Cynthia Ball (D 49) defeated Repub incumbents Rob Bryan (D88) and Gary Pendleton (D49).
(7) House newcomer Larry Strickland (R, D28) def. newcomer Pat Oliver (D).
(8) In the NC Senate, Danny Earl Britt (R) def. incumbent Jane Smith (D). Smith was the only NC Senate incumbent to lose in November.
(9) In the NC Senate, the count is 34 Republicans and 16 Democrats.

In the face of another overwhelming state election defeat -- with the exception of the unsettled NC governor's outcome -- Dems had to do SOMETHING. So they have turned, once again, to their only friendly bulwark -- the federal courts, specially the U.S. Court of Appeals of the 4th Circuit where three liberal judges -- Judge Diana Motz, a Bill Clinton appointee; Judge James A. Wynn Jr., a Barack Obama appointee; and Judge Henry F. Floyd, an Obama appointee -- ruled in 2016 the redrawn (mandated by NC law as a General Assembly duty) electoral districts were declared unconstitutional and the voter I.D. requirement of the legislature violated civil rights of minority groups. This was announced three weeks after the Nov. election results in which Dems declare no voter fraud occurred -- which should be a puzzlement to them and other liberals.

Re: “Rhapsody in Blues: Jazz Phenom Gerald Clayton Celebrates One of Durham’s Finest Musical Exports at Duke

Gerald & the team on 'Piedmont Blues' spent a great deal of time with living, though elderly, Piedmont blues musicians. Duke Performances, working with Music Makers, has presented many of these artists over the past decade. After considerable conversation & consideration it was our conclusion that none of those musicians was nimble enough to effectively participate in this project. To be clear, Clayton's 'Piedmont Blues' is a synthetic project that attempts to honor the elders while making a presentation that bristles with a contemporary energy; only the audience will be able to determine whether this approach works.

Re: “Rhapsody in Blues: Jazz Phenom Gerald Clayton Celebrates One of Durham’s Finest Musical Exports at Duke

I would be curious to know why living Piedmont Blues legends are not involved in the actual performance when they are still alive and extremely capable at their craft, why this is not a performance collaboration.

Re: “Learn to Wreck the Racks at Local Thrift Stores

I'd like to point out that by shopping at the Durham Rescue Mission thrift store you are supporting the work they do in Durham. They are run opaquely by the Mills family, openly hostile to the LGBT community, bad neighbors to Golden Belt, and require church attendance to receive resident services. If you're cool with all of those things, continue to support. Otherwise the list you provide includes a great thrift - Trosa. Pennies for Change and the Scrap Exchange also have great thrift shops that support amazing orgs that do great work in our community. Consider donating and shopping where the organization fully supports what you support.

Re: “Residents: Meeting on DPD Shooting Accomplished Nothing

The November 28, 2016, Chicago Sun-Times, Fran Spielman article: "Black Politicians Unite After Murder of Congressman's Grandson" outlined specifically the exact plan that Todd Elliott Koger has shared with the Congressional black leadership, the "Movement for Blacklivesmatter," Rev. Jesse Jackson, private foundations, and the like. In fact, Mr. Koger had already complained that the Urban League also usurped this proposal.

None of the black leadership named in the Chicago Sun-Times article had previously demonstrated any interest for the suggestion until apparently "word got out that Mr. Koger also shared the Plan with Donald Trump." That is, the black leadership named in the Chicago Sun-Times' article has always taken direct issue with Mr. Trump arguing that "BLACKS ARE NOT LIVING IN THE PRECARIOUS SITUATION OUTLINED." Donald Trump was the only one willing to listen to Mr. Koger (blacks have been voting almost 50 years straight Democrat and our situation remained the same or worst).

First Mr. Trump issued an online video that addressed our plight. Next he went to Michigan and then took the message to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Thereafter, Mr. Koger packaged the visual optics and shared Mr. Trump's fight against the status quo with black America to grow an arsenal of black Trump supporters.

When sh*t hit the fan in October 2016 and everyone started to run from Mr. Trump . . . Mr. Koger suggested the need for a new writing for black America to put things back on track. Thereafter, Mr. Trump almost immediately issued a "New Deal For Black America."

Donald Trump owes his victory to "predominately black Democratic strongholds of Pennsylvania" who were convinced to give Mr. Trump more votes than the previous Republican Party presidential candidate. African Americans like Todd Elliott Koger convinced hundreds of thousands blacks in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, and various other states to boycott the traditional "straight" Democratic Party vote.

Mr. Trump's "margin of victory" is realized when you combine this with an increase of "Obama white voters" in Wisconsin and Michigan voting Trump in 2016. Trump won Pennsylvania by 1.1 percentage points (68,236 votes), Wisconsin by 0.9 points (27,257 votes), and Michigan by 0.2 points (11,837 votes). If Hillary Clinton had won all three states, she would have won the Electoral College 278 to 260. She fell short in all three.

I wonder how many weeks this campaign will continue. In the meantime, if the allegations have merit, I'm sure the North Carolina Judicial Standards Commission would like to hear of them.…

Otherwise I'm not sure what the poster is attempting to achieve here.

Re: “Christine Walczyk

Judge Christine Walczyk of the Wake County Courts is CORRUPT. I am not the Plaintiff or Defendant in the case but I was a witness in a case where Judge Walczyk showed no respect at all to one of the litigants in the case. Walczyk violated the rules of the Court and the Rules of Civil Procedure. Walczyk feels she does not need to follow any rules. She mocked and ridiculed a litigant whom was a pro se litigant and told the litigant it was "exhausting" for her to listen to the litigant present her case. She also laughed at the litigant and told the litigant that she thinks "it is funny" that the litigant would think that she would be shown any respect. Apparently Judge Christine Walczyk lost her copy of the Judicial Code of Conduct because Walczyk's behavior completely violates it. Judge Walczyk already committed perjury in this same case as she already lied about what one of the witnesses said in the case even though she heard the testimony herself and then Judge Walczyk completely lied about what the person stated. There is an audio recording of the court hearing as there is of all the court hearings. It shows on the public NC Board of Election Campaign Finance site that Judge Christine Walczyk spent campaign money buying something from a company that is owned by the husband of a lawyer that frequently presents cases in her court. It gets worse and even more corrupt as not only did Walczyk spend money and do business with the lawyer's husband, Walczyk also reimbursed the lawyer as shown on the campaign finance site. C-O-R-R-U-P-T Judge Walczyk hears case frequently from this lawyer. Oh and wait it gets even more corrupt, the Chief District Court Judge named Judge Robert Rader has a wife named Megg Potter Rader and Megg Potter Rader donated a large amount of money to Judge Christine's Walczyk's campaign for fundraising yet Judge Rader is responsible for approving or rejecting Requests for Reassignments. Surprise, Surprise why Judge Walczyk is out of control and thinks the rules just don't apply to her.

Re: “Where Do We Go from Here?

What ever Trump has plans for is not looking good for those of us who work for a living...Trump already said he thinks we are paid to much and work to little...This coming from a man who has never known hard work...He surrounds himself with idiots and industry zealots ...And they all have some real screwed up conservative agendas..

Now if your rich these agendas wont concern you in fact it will be your utopia... you will sing the GOP praise whistling zippidy do da and dancing a jig.....BUT...If you are just your average light middle to lower income worker paying rent and all that entails plus kids woooweee...And that's millions and millions of people..Then his policies are going to be your drudge and misery...

Things the GOP and Trump hate...minimum wage..UN-employment insurance..workmen comp...OHSA...SSN..Medicare..Medicaid...Social Services..employer health care.....Or to be able to sue your boss for any thing...Republicans want you to totally be on your own with no help, no hope, no prospects, their only resolve is to tell you to get a job. They don't care if jobs are scarce that's no excuse..In fact they don't even want you to vote because they know you wouldn't vote for them because your misery will taint your vote ...Only an idiot who works for a living would vote republican.

...The republicans expect you to pull yourself up by them bootstraps and get on with it republicans expect you to sacrifice and suck it up...They want you to do something that they themselves have never had to do and if they did they would have to call daddy to bail them out...They lay awake at night thinking about some poor kid eating a good slice of beef and a coke and candy bar on their dime...But think nothing of corporate criminals stealing billions of dollars and not seeing a day in jail and then get big tax breaks and subsidies on tax payer dime or to spend millions of dollars in tax payer money trying to find something which to burn a democrat candidate who is running for president, when the very one they support is one of the biggest con men to ever sell a car...and a crook of all crooks....In fact all republican lawmakers are just your basic garden variety crooks and cons who don't represent you.

Now y'all can praise him all you want, so be it....But in doing so, I can call you out as being stupid beyond belief.....In four years, if life has been good to you, I am sure you will give him another four years I doubt it......

.When you get disabled at no fault to you and no ssn what will you do?....or no unemployment insurance or medicare for when your old and cant work and don't have ssn....Bleak picture for millions in the next few years and maybe beyond....SPOILER ALERT....Thats why these programs exist, they are for you, not corporations or opinionated stupid, dumber, n dogshit republican, politicians....These are working mans perks, just like the rich mans perks, only ours are much smaller...Why do they get perks and then they call ours as being moochers or entitlements....Well I know who the real moochers are..Thats every republican politician who gets a government check..He and or her is one big old mooching assbag..

Re: “In Wayne County, N.C., Trump’s America Is Angry

Based on some of the comments here, I'm to understand that Mr. Mozingo is a worthless piece of trash because he's white. because he supported Trump, and because he has a criminal record. Check. There are even inferences made about his level of education and whether or not he's ever been in a library.

Out of curiosity ... would people be saying this if he had darker skin? Or are we simply at a point where it's OK to trash Caucasians, but to do the same to an African American man in similar circumstances would evoke cries of "BIGOT!" and "RACIST!"?

By the way, I don't condone either. Yes, it appears that Mr. Mozingo has made some bad choices in life, as many people do. Yes, he has political opinions that many of us don't share. But if we're truly going to act like the enlightened people we fancy ourselves to be, then wouldn't it make sense to offer a little more compassion and respect than the vitriol being spewed here?

Oh, and if there was only a way to ensure that convicted felons and the like aren't participating in elections. If there was only a way to make sure that at the person showing up at the polls is who he/she claims to be. If only there was a way ...

(Caveat: I was born and raised in a Commonwealth country that has long been known as a torch-bearer of fair democracy. For as long as I've been alive people have been required there to show ID when voting. In fact, I never knew that there were first world countries that didn't require voter ID until I lawfully immigrated to the United States where, as a citizen and active voter, I still instinctively produce my ID when I go to vote.)

Re: “Organize or Die: The Left Needs Its Own Tea Party

Back in the 20th century we used to have wonderful strong democrats who would never allow any bullies, either extreme religious right wing gun nuts who wish to destroy women's rights or slash public education, affordable housing, decent working conditions and necessary government regulations for the good of all people to kick them around! FDR, LBJ, Harry Truman, Hubert Humphrey and Adlai Stevenson, just to name a few! Those real democrats really represented ALL working class and middle income people in this country! They all tried to create real democratic LIBERTY and Fair And equal justice for all!

But ever since REAGAN, unions that protected the working class Americans and regulations that prevented American manufacturing jobs from being shipped to third world countries, especially in ASIA were destroyed and the Anerican workers who used to have the manufacturing jobs were kicked to the curb, into slums and HOMELESSNESS!

The democrats under REAGAN caved in to most of his demands. He was the first republican to change the party from a reasonable centrist right wing party to a CRUEL FASCIST PARTY

Bush 41 made things worse and the democrats once again FAILED to fight back until the economy crashed and big companies (especially insurance companies) who used to value all of their older experienced employees and treat them well and encourage them to stay with the company up to retirement age were now TRASHING their older workers and kicking them to the curb at ages 40-60, an age when they are TOO YOUNG to get Social Security or job pensions and at the same time too OLD to easily find new jobs! A VICIOUS HORRIBLE THING TO Do to Older Working Class Americans!

Finally in 1992 Clinton got elected because if the way REAGAN and BUSH destroyed the economy and the economy got better

But the republicans still PREVENTED the democrats from bringing manufacturing jobs back because the big companies did not have to pay American taxes if the plants and jobs were in China or India and they could pay the third world people cheaper wages than they paid the American workers, and they were DETERMINED to keep their gravy train that REAGAN and BUSH 41 gave them!

The democrats once again failed to FIGHT BACK and rally the people against corporate greed that destroyed American jobs.

Clinton was ruined also be the Lewinsky scandal because ever since REAGAN
The playing field between Democrats and Republicans is not fair and equal.
Republicans can get away with all kinds of scandals and horrible crimes. But all it takes to cause a democrat to be ruined is an extra-marital affair!

Again the democrats failed to fight back which they should have done, exposing republican corruption and holding REAGAN accountable for giving arms to IRAN in exchange for the hostages and DESTROYING the lives of millions of Anerican workers by allowing CEO's to ship Anerican jobs overseas and lay off older workers at an age where they are TOO OLD to find new jobs and TOO YOUNG for retirement benefits!

Then BUSH 43 stole the election by refusing to allow a re-count of Florida's bored!

GOTEvabd the whole democrat party turned COWARDLY instead of fighting for the right to get a fair recount!

Then the 9-11 attacks occurred and the Whole GOP EXPLOITED the tragedy leading us into an unjust and costly war with IRAQ! The congressional democrats CAVED IN!

In 2004 the democrat candidate JOHN KERRYbwas ruined by the fear mongering propaganda SWIFTBOAT attacks!

The whole democrat party TURNED COWARDLY instead of fighting back! The bastard BUSH 43 got a Second term

Those who don't fight back NEVER win. You cannot pick up a rattle snake and expect to tame it and make it a pet!

When Obama got elected he thought he could get the republican (now fill blown FASCIST) party to settle down and work with him! He was unfortunately WRONG!

In August of 2009 the damn GOP unleashed a vicious army of hateful RASCIST TEA PARTY foot soldiers to run wild all over America, MALICIOUSLY SMASHING UP AND MALICIOUSLY DESTROYING every single town hall meeting that President Obama set up all over the land to explain his healthcare reform program to the public.

When that happened I sent emails to Organizing for America and The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. BEGGING them to FIGHT BACK against the vicious attacking Tea Partiers! I told them that failure to fight back against GOP attacks would DESTROY all of our efforts to TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK from the corporate Greedy Republicans who did so much damage with REAGAN and BOTH BUSHES!

All I ever got from them was a stupid INSULTING Email telling me that the TEA PARTY was nothing more than a nasty little bunch of crackpots who would surely go away if we good democrats just IGNIRED THEM! WRONG!

Bullies only get more vicious when their victims do not fight back

And just as I feared President Obama LOST his democrat majorities in BOTH houses of congress and most state governor seats because progressive voters HATE COWARDS who let republican bullies kick them around! The refusal of the progressive Cortes to turn out in good numbers on Election Day is all the damn Reiubkucan FASCISTS need to win!

And thanks to the COWARDLY "Democrats" who lost the congress, MITCH MC CONNELL who is just as horrible as Donald Trump has DESTROYED President Obama's constitutional right to have his nominated Man, a DECENT FAIR Minded judge named MERRICK Garland given a fair hearing and nomination to the Supreme Court! TRUMP will add to the court a horrible religious fanatic just like SCALIA who WILL send women back to the days of COAT HANGER BACK ALLEY ABORTIONS!

Because the democrats have turned COWARDLY, instead if fighting back, just like the Weimar Republic democrats of 1833 Gernany!

Evil flourishes when good people do NOTHING instead of fighting back!

That is why TRUMP and all the other republicans WILL turn America into the same nightmare that Germany was in 1933-1945

Re: “A Desperate Pat McCrory Makes His Last Stand

Promoting and supporting poor policy, like voter suppression, HB2, and extremely poor coal ash regulation, is despicable but human. Attempting to change the results of an election you have obviously lost is possibly criminal and most definitely puerile. Cooper's lead grows with every inane, baseless, and desperate challenge. Grow a pair McCrory. Show a little class on your way out the door.

Re: “Uber Really, Really Doesn’t Pay Very Well, According to a Lawsuit Filed in North Carolina

Uber was great pay when it started in the Raleigh area but it has gotten much less lucrative as time has gone on. Uber has and continues to be using some extremely deceptive practices and does all it can to hide them. Ubers interests and the drivers interests are not well aligned making them bad partners. Uber has slashed rates dramatically claiming it would increase income. That has not come to pass. Instead Uber raised their Booking Fee from $1.00 to $1.80, increasing their revenue per ride by 80 cents and not sharing any of that with the driver. So lower rates by roughly $1.00 a trip, then raise the fee by 80 cents means that Uber is getting .60 more per trip AND drivers make .80 less per trip. This adds up over time. Uber also has started quoting prices as a flat rate which is an estimate that's a little higher than the time and mileage fee that used to be charged but they still reimburse the driver by time and mileage. In most cases this means they pocket a little extra change on each ride. On the few rides where a passenger would remember what rate they paid, Uber was making an extra $1.00 that they were not splitting with the driver per their agreement. Uber wants to get massive volume, to the point of taking passengers away from the bus while the drivers need better rates to make a decent living.
People who leased cars to do Uber when it paid better are stuck now as the floor drops out from under them between lower rates and increased competition. I also don't need to mention how Uber has mislead the public into believing that a tip is included in the rate when in fact that's not the case.

Re: “Mind the Food Gap: Who Does Farm-to-Table Serve?

There's a huge difference between the food stuffs you see at Kroger/HT/Publix and the real deal you can get when you are supporting local farmers--from a nutritional standpoint. The people that eat cheaply will pay for it later in medical cost. The equation always balances. So follow the flavor. From Dan Barber to Vivian Howard to AC--the proof is in the burger. The reason so many chefs cook with so much salt/technique/obfuscation these days is that the proteins most suppliers sell are becoming more and more bland as they have had to use products raised with a focus on yield--as opposed to raising breeds/varietals chosen for flavor. There's an argument to be made that the modern American palate has become dulled as it has been further removed from the practice of food production at the home of any kind. Hence the rise of (gotta admit it's delicious) the pork belly culture--eating only the tasty small parts of the animal, while having no idea or willingness to tolerate off cuts or offal. This loss is at the expense of the appreciation of flavor; the joy of "fishy fish", "grass fed beef", and "heritage breed vegetables." Oh, and pimento cheese sucks.
