Re: “Charges Dropped in Controversial Durham Marijuana Bust; One Arresting Officer No Longer with DPD

To each his own, I guess. I will never understand what's so great about getting high. Is life so bad that we have to alter our environment to find it enjoyable. I wouldn't brag about being able to grow contraband because that is what it is. This myth that marijuana doesn't hurt anyone...well let's take a trip down to the border and speak with victims of the gangs and cartels pushing weed and other drugs across the border. We can sometimes be selfish and narrow-minded.

Re: “Charges Dropped in Controversial Durham Marijuana Bust; One Arresting Officer No Longer with DPD

As a Colorado resident with 24 legally growing plants I am miffed by what is happening in the southern states. Each day I read about people getting charged with felonies for a few plants. Police invading homes over small amounts of marijuana. Three productive law abiding citizens live in my home including myself. We hurt no one, still go to work, obey the law, pay our taxes. Why continue this policy of going after cannabis consumers. Not to mention all the money it costs.
I just don't get it.

Re: “North Carolina Voter ID Law Is Discriminatory, Federal Appeals Court Rules, Striking It Down

i'm sure there's other redundant protocols in place at the state level - we're quite good at that.

Re: “Coin dealer flips the game on counterfeiter

He was found innocent because he had legitimate paper work that his father had stating these coins were purchased from a mint advertised on Tv years ago. His Father thought he was making an investment in his families future. Little did he know back then they were fake. His father passed leaving the coins and silver to his children. Crazy to think this could happen to any of us. Could you imagine not knowing they were fake? How humiliating.

Re: “The Republican National Convention, Day Three: “Close Your Eyes and Take Some Soothing Breaths”

Great write up Barry Yeoman. You have articulated the overall scene beautifully. I can picture the place as I read the story. Nice work.

Anyone who wants to blame someone for HB2 can blame me. I fully support HB2 and am quite willing to take full responsibility for it.

Re: “Love never dies, but many terrible musicals have: Sitting through Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom sequel.

This show is dreadful. I watched clips of the London production which lacked the wonderful sets in the Australian production. Overall, the story and music are dire. None of the songs have the lasting impact of Phantom of the Opera. It's as if everything that worked before was annihilated.

Re: “The Progressive Case for Hillary Clinton

The trouble with Hillary Clinton is everything. She can't be everything to everybody, yet she tries. People like you, blinded by the truth, and so wanting to press your agenda, disregard the facts. How can a progressive who claims to cut down corporate greed and control, do anything, when she has taken over 100 million dollars from financial companies. The only way, I can see her winning, is by a disportionate number of people that disregard the facts and vote for a liar. It's sad but true, there are more people like you than honest people. That's why we call you sheep. God help us if she wins.

Re: “North Carolina Voter ID Law Is Discriminatory, Federal Appeals Court Rules, Striking It Down

But what about all those cases of voter fraud? Crickets!

It is heartening that the judges weighed the obvious intent of the odious ID law and struck it down. It's a great day in Carolina.

Re: “The Trump Show: North Carolina Republicans Reckon with Their Party’s New Leader

Being a Republican means being essentially a traitor. Some like Woodhouse and Hayes are there big time with Pope, but people cited here are "enablers". How anyone can support the line up of crass, uncivil, unsympathetic, mean, racist alleged candidates in the Republican Party is far beyond me. These people have undertaken, primarily as member of White Christian America to drive any and all they can into theocracy - I have no faith, liking or understanding of their pernicious and damaging doctrines and laws. They are always waiting like someone to tell them what "Father" requires and their slavish attention to their religious shamans defies makes them sheep, loud but sheep. Democrats often work this way, but they are far outstripped by the Republicans who have set to destroy education, taxes we need for proper investments, government services. They are greedy and self serving, and willing to force their "gawd" up your nose in one heart beat. And they are white, White Christian Americans, thankfully a dwindling group but determined to burn the house down before they are rendered obsolete and hopefully silent. They desperately fear being discriminated against, because they know how they have screwed others, primarily black , brown, other. A curse on their house and generation! May they die out and no memory be made of this group of miserable people whose only intent is harming others.

Re: “Is the Durham GOP’s New Headquarters Violating Zoning Laws?

The owners of all the other vacant homes (there are currently 5 on this/our block), are possibly waiting for a big pay off that isn't going to come. They all want way more than the home are are worth in their current conditions. We tried to buy 215 as a rental property. For a variety of reasons it didn't work out and fell through over a year ago. However, there wasn't much effort put into at least renting it out either before or after we had a contract.

Re: “The Trump Show: North Carolina Republicans Reckon with Their Party’s New Leader

JPlease read this; there are a number of true patriots in our midst! Mark Mahaffey, Linda Devore, Ted Hicks, Rod Chaney, Brad Smith, W Jeff Lominac, Brent Jones, Bill Lebo, Ann Stokes ... I honor each and every one of you, and so many more unnamed here!

"I have a story to share from the RNC. It needs to be told. And retold.

It sums up the collective courage of the true and committed Cruz delegates on the floor last Monday before the voice vote to decide whether to have a floor vote to free the delegates, and unbind them (us) from the restrictions imposed by the state GOP and the Republican party. A petition had been signed by many of the delegates from many states requesting a roll call vote, and when the delegations on the floor learned of it, the Party establishment and Trump whips went on the offensive to crush it.
The pressure to conform and to be silent, and to remove our names from the signed petition advocating freeing of the delegates was intense. Very, very intense.

The situation was chaotic. The noise level was extreme. Chairman Hayes had said that every NC delegate's name was to come off that petition, and he didn't care how it was done (I heard this myself). The Trump faithful from our own NC GOP leadership and a couple of the green hatted Trump whips moved in and went to work to intimidate and frighten. It was too loud to talk well, and Jean Griswold texted to ask me if I would stand firm. I texted back that we would stand "like a stonewall". She said to move back a row to sit with them for support. I climbed over the chairs and sat with Jean and Ann Stokes. Then Ted Hicks texted to say to join him near the delegation microphone in the aisle beside our seats, where Hayes, Woodhouse, a whip, and others had surrounded Duane Cutlip and were insisting he remove his name from the petition. I made my way to Ted, who had made a stand beside Duane, when I looked back.... and my heart broke.

Two or three men, including at least one Trump whip, had gathered around our own Linda Devore, and were leaning over and into her and were all screaming at her to take her name off the petition. I saw spit flying from a screaming mouth. Linda had curled up in her seat to get away from them, and her face was flushed red, and they were leaning directly over her and screaming, and she was cowering down away from them.

And then she raised her face to them and I saw her jaws clench.....and she shook her head "no". Repeatedly.

I don't know if anyone else saw this happen. Maybe everyone did. I don't know. But for several seconds all sound receeded, and all I could see was Linda's face shaking from side to side in defiance, in a mute refusal to yield in the face of what appeared to be the threat of physical violence. I was too far away to help her.

One of the bravest things I have ever seen. It probably lasted seconds, but seemed like minutes. And it is burned into my memory forever. True courage in the face of tyranny.
I haven't spoken with Linda about this, or the impact it had on me. Everything was still a little too raw, and somehow it seemed so surreal. But it happened. And Linda and every other NC delegate that signed that petition stood and never wavered. Like a stonewall.

I salute you.
