Nice cover pic..Those beers the two drank is enough to have killed both of them. Binge drinking is a big problem for our youth. Way to glorify it you guys..I wish I could say I expected better from the Indy....Could whoever approved this photo please explain the process in the next issue?

Excellent point overall, especially in the context of Hopscotch. I think it's hard for the human brain to resist classification, so maybe we have to learn to rely on our personal genre definitions for our own personal use and leave it at that.

yup...Superchunk was NEVER a punk band. Neither was Pipe. Bill and Terror hit it on the head. None of the hipster/scenester types ever come out to ACTUAL punk rock shows. Never have, actually, which is good. Danny Hooley came to a show where Under the Street used to be about 10 years ago and wrote a totally clueless, judgemental, self righteous 'back-in-my-day-we-were-so-much-better' piece about the Durham scene for some long forgotten paper and when he got the hint that people were'nt happy he never showed up at any other show for, well...he still don't come around to punk shows---not that anybody would recognize him, but...whatever. The real punk scene is more vibrant now than it has been in years. Sure it can get violent on occasion, and perhaps it ain't the most liberal, accepting scene on the planet---maybe all the mostly fictitious CHBC/BCS mythology scares people away, I don't know---but at the end of the day it's PUNK ROCK. Come hang out. If you don't act the fool, people ain't gonna give you shit or run you off for no reason. Come see.

Great photos. As someone who attended but beforehand hadn't heard of any of these bands (and didn't listen to much of the type of music featured), there were several bands I enjoyed. A great and positive crowd as well. BTW on day three its Berkeley not Berkley

Hah! One of the best unintended side-effects of a successful Hopscotch: suddenly all those folks who never drag themselves out of Durham now know their way around downtown Raleigh and it's clubs.

Thanks for the mention Terror. I am the singer/bass player from Dead To Society (Bill) and I agree with you, never heard of these bands (except Double Negative). I also feel punk is NOT dead. I became part of the local scene in 1986 and I have watched the scene grow and reduce but never die. My band feels overlooked many times by local media. It's dead to you because you dont recognize it, write about it, or promote it. Instead you write about bands we will rarely if ever see. I feel there is a viable local scene in the triangle area we just never get mentioned. It's always Indy bands and Granola music getting all the glory. Without punk Indy wouldn't even exist! Indy...DIY...thats the root of punk rock. It may be dead in your eyes but Ive been here in this scene since 1986 and I aint leaving until I die! Im proud of our small scene. We have some great people around here and some damn good punk bands. I should add the we haven't been completely overlooked as Indy has written two great reviews of our two albums. Even though they were very short reviews and no promotion for our CD release shows and hardly ever Indy picked....I guess we have at least been mentioned and Im thankful for that. I also feel Indy and other local media outlets could do a hell of a lot more for our local punk bands as far as publicity. I keep reading about the same old bands time and time again. Boring! Well Dead To Society is on the verge of making some serious waves, even if we have to take some very serious steps (recording in Hollywood California on our own budget) to get there. Dead To Society is here for the long run so recognize us or not we will be here. Punk It Up!!! ~ILL BILL~

Oh please dangerous my ass. I went to the punkfest last month and all the people where doing where sitting around on their ass drinking beer. And there wasn't even any music mostly. The gentlemen is just promoting his crew and judging a band with out even knowing them. Some of the bands listed are awesome they are just not from Raleigh, but i guess he couldn't read the article before posting his comment.

The photo is not glorifying drinking, unless one finds such a state of disarray enticing. Irreverent? Yes, but if anything, it illustrates a cautionary tale.
